In the wake of the unnatural deaths of three student boarders in IIT Kharagpur campus, the institute is considering steps to address academic stress among students.

In the aftermath of the tragic deaths of three student boarders at IIT Kharagpur within a year, the premier engineering institute is contemplating measures to alleviate academic stress among students. Acting director Amit Patra mentioned that discussions are ongoing to introduce reforms in the attendance policy to balance student well-being and academic performance. He also emphasized the importance of intensive counseling for students facing mental stress and depression. The institute encourages students to seek counseling for their mental well-being.

Regarding the attendance policy, Patra mentioned that teachers vary in their strictness, with some being more lenient without compromising academic standards. He emphasized the need to maintain discipline and academic standards. Weekly tests and attendance are essential components of the academic calendar at the institute. The Senate will review the attendance policy to ensure that it benefits every student without negatively impacting their academic performance.

To address concerns about mental stress and student well-being, a committee is being formed to investigate the factors behind the recent student deaths on campus. The committee will assess the institutional support system and environment for hostel boarders in light of recent tragedies. The institute is committed to implementing necessary steps and reforms to safeguard student well-being.

The Senate will convene to discuss these issues and consider all aspects, including cases of acute mental stress and the possibility of de-registering students due to attendance issues. The well-being of students remains a top priority for the institute, and all decisions will be made in the best interests of student welfare.
