Republicans Seek Federal Probe into Zohran Mamdani's Citizenship Status

Republicans and affiliated groups are requesting a federal investigation into the citizenship status of Zohran Mamdani, who emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for the New York City mayoral race. Some are advocating for his denaturalization and deportation. Mamdani, the son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, has come under intense scrutiny after his primary win ahead of the November mayoral election in NYC.

Amid mounting calls for an inquiry and deportation, US President Donald Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, issued a stern warning to Zohran Mamdani, stating that immigration enforcement will intensify particularly against sanctuary cities. Homan emphasized that immigration enforcement officials would not hesitate to apprehend individuals, even outside jails.

Political Background

Zohran Mamdani, who has been serving as an assembly member since 2021, obtained American citizenship in 2018 shortly after completing college. He has faced Islamophobic attacks due to his political views and positions on US foreign policy.

Tennessee Republican congressman Andy Ogles has urged the federal government to revoke Mamdani's US citizenship and initiate deportation proceedings against him. Ogles penned a letter to US Attorney General Pam Bondi, urging the Department of Justice to investigate whether Mamdani obtained his citizenship through fraudulent means related to terrorism.
