Delhi Development Authority to Create Waste-to-Art Theme Park near Nehru Place
Delhi Development Authority plans to develop a waste-to-art theme park showcasing historic ruins using construction and demolition waste.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is set to develop its first waste-to-art theme park at one of its largest green spaces in the city near Nehru Place. The theme of 'walk through the ruins' will be showcased to highlight the legacy of historic structures through ruins. The park, spread across southeast and south Delhi, is being constructed in Astha Kunj district, officials revealed on Tuesday. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated the park in 2002, and it was initially planned as a spiritual green space. However, the agency is now exploring the creation of the waste-to-art park at the location.
The project will utilize construction and demolition waste for recreating replicas of popular ruins across the country. The replicas are expected to include iconic structures like Ajanta and Ellora Caves, ancient ruins in Karnataka's Hampi, the Konark Sun Temple, Khajuraho Temples, and the Sanchi Stupa, among others. The aim of the 'walk through the ruins' plan is to recreate some of the most iconic ruins of human civilizations as a historic tribute and from an artistic perspective. Waste material from construction and demolition sites will be used to design all the ruins, walls, and even benches in the park.
The consultant for the project will be responsible for planning and project management, financial analysis, brand audit, community engagement, and stakeholder consultation. The consultant will collaborate with architects, engineers, and environmental experts to integrate sustainable design principles and eco-friendly practices into project planning and development.
While officials are optimistic about the project, some residents in the area have expressed doubts about its implementation due to the presence of criminal activities like snatchings and even murder in the park. The park has been a hotspot for antisocial elements and drug addicts, leading to instances of crime and safety concerns for the residents.
Despite the challenges, the DDA aims to turn the park into a vibrant cultural and artistic space through the waste-to-art theme park initiative. The project is expected to create a unique experience for visitors by showcasing the beauty of historic ruins from across India.
