Chief Minister Nitish Kumar hints at a possible split with BJP, sparking speculations and rumors in the political circles of Bihar ahead of state assembly polls later this year.

Nitish Kumar Leaves Everyone Guessing

With Bihar buzzing with political activity, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar raised eyebrows when he hinted at a possible split with BJP during a public meeting attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Madhubani. Without directly naming the individual, Kumar pointed towards a party leader sitting behind him on the dais. "We have always been together, but someone created a mess. Later, they felt they had messed up. For the first time in 2005, we fought together against our rivals, who were all together. He was the president of our party then," Kumar said.

Lalan Singh Speculated to be the Key Player

Following his remarks, speculation abounds that Kumar was hinting at Lalan Singh, who was the JD(U) national president in 2022 when Nitish Kumar joined hands with the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance). The Grand Alliance in Bihar, as it stands, comprises JD(U) and BJP's toughest rivals, the RJD, the Congress, and left parties.

Lalan Singh, the Union Minister for Animal Husbandry, and the current MP from Bihar's Munger constituency, resigned from his post as the national president of JD(U) in December 2023. Nitish Kumar then took over the reins of the party as the 2024 Lok Sabha polls drew near.

Singh's resignation came amid reports that he, along with RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, was planning to make Tejashwi Yadav the Chief Minister and ask Nitish Kumar to step down. With Nitish Kumar rejecting Lalan Singh's proposal of making Tejashwi Yadav the Chief Minister, Lalan Singh began planning to break up the Janata Dal United, as claimed by reports.

Upcoming Polls in Bihar

Bihar, with 243 assembly seats, will go to polls later this year, with the NDA taking on the Mahagathbandhan.
